Broken does not begin in an erotic fashion — it starts with
Sasha Grey weeping uncontrollably and masturbating on the bathroom
floor. The scene is soaked in shadows, and her acting is painfully
realistic. Pain is a recurring theme in this ambitious film, and
director Dave Navarro is gifted at making viewers empathize with the
pain his characters experience. The first real sex scene has dominant
Mark Davis manhandling Sasha roughly. The lighting is strange, intense,
and washed-out, and the dialogue is often inaudible.... though there are
Italian subtitles. (An artistic touch that doesn't immediately make a
lot of sense, but it's certainly memorable.) There's lots of choking and
slapping, and the scene isn't particularly linear — there are jump-cuts
to mid-fuck, mid-blowjob, and back again — and then things get really
strange. (How strange? Sasha cooks up Mark's jizz in a spoon, sucks it
into a syringe, ties off her arm, and then, presumably, injects it into
a vein.) The next sex scene has Jenna Haze and Tommy Gunn in a hackneyed
porn set-up: he's the pizza guy, she's the girl who wants to tip him
with sexual favors. But most of the non-sex action is on fast-forward,
with them zooming around the room with sped-up chipmunk voices, only
slowing to normal speed when she drops to suck his cock. But you only
see a moment of that before the camera angle changes and reveals that
we're on the scene of a porno, with several couples being shot
simultaneously. Pretty soon we're dipping in and out of those other
scenes, with Spyder Jonez fucking Victoria Sin, and a point-of-view
blowjob with Sasha sucking off a camera-wielding Marco Banderas, and
Lisa Daniels and Kayla Paige going at it girl-on-girl. About half the
movie's running time is spent on this set, jumping from scene to scene
and back again, with performers wandering around and joining each other,
until finally it's a kind of cooperative orgy. Hot? Yes. Confusing? Also
yes. The final scene has Sasha returning to Mark Davis, wielding a
shotgun, and forcing him to do some rather humiliating things. For a
moment, you might think you understand what's happening — she's a porn
star in an abusive relationship, who can't take anymore. But in its
final minute, the film manages to pull another mindfuck on the
viewer, and it's both disturbing and quite satisfying. This is weird,
ambitious, and hot, well worth your time. (2007, 1 hr 15 min)

So, this movie doesn't start off too surreal: A girl's last
single girlfriend is getting married, and she's depressed because her
boyfriend is off in Los Angeles running a strip club. So, she decides to
go out to LA and be with
him...
And then things get surreal. She finds LA, but not LA as we know
it: It's a strange land full of anonymous sex, porn stars, and weirdos.
OK, maybe that is LA as we know it, but she seems to find it
all, in rapid succession. It's a (very funny) parody of how people view
Los Angeles, and it works remarkably well. The sex, while standard Los
Angeles porn sex, is superb examples of the genre, and the cast manages
to get some acting in even during the sex. And Evan Stone is, as always,
the comic
center.
The only real problem, as with all Vivid releases, is the
mass of really tacky ads that they insist on putting at the front of
disk. Fast-forward is all we can recommend. (2006, 86 min.)

Honey Bunny might be best described as art-house porno, a
bizarre and often outright surrealistic film filled with strange
dialogue, oddball characters, weird images, and a recurring bunny rabbit
motif; that said, it's also filled with hot and strange and inventive
sex scenes, and should satisfy viewers who like their porn to err on the
side of weird. The first proper sex scene has Max Mikita cuffed and
chained by beefcakey Jordan Ash. Adrianna Nicole wears a leather bondage
mask (with bunny ears and a rabbit face!) while Tyler Knight works her
over with a Hitachi magic wand. The mask comes off (and a blindfold and
dog collar go on) for fantastic cocksucking and contotionist
ass-fucking. Other highlights include Varla Vex topping the adorable
Poppy Roxx, dribbling her with hot wax and fucking her with a
carrot-shaped dildo. Swirling psychedlia abounds, and surrealism has
never been sexier. (2008, 120 min.)

Melodie Gore is the adorable alt-porn headliner for Man's
Ruin, a surprisingly peppy, fun flick about a geek girl who gets
trapped in an incredibly kinky videogame. A lot of alt-porn goes the
bleak-and-nihilistic route, but — some dark moments aside — this one
indulges in over-the-top weirdness instead. Most of the scenes are
"levels" from the eponymous game, which include a weird hospital room
(with Ava Rose as a beautifully made-up fuck doll for Chris Charming in
a mad-scientist role; he shaves her legs with a straight-razor at the
beginning, then moves on to fucking her perfect body), a Satanic ritual
chamber (with Roxy DeVille in full goth-gear pleasuring her dark master
Barry Scott), a night club (for a nice, if comparatively conventional,
all-girl orgy scene), a pornographer's studio (with Mia Rose as a
ponygirl and Jay Huntington as a posing bodybuilder, eventually fucking
for the pornographer's camera), and a final chamber with cute Asian
Lystra wrapped in fabric and tormented by Claire Adams as the
riding-crop-wielding "final boss." Don't worry — Melodie is there to
save the day and beat the game. It's essentially a weird collection of
vignettes, but they're all outstanding, and the interstitial non-sex
stuff is even weirder. This is a memorable flick. There's a whole disc
of extras, most notably (and hilariously) a 1965 anti-pornography short
film called "Perversion for Profit." (2007, 85 min.)

are unusually long, nicely composed, beautifully shot, and intense,
though there are long stretches of surreal action in between, so prepare
yourself for something fascinatingly bizarre. The music is good, too,
with pulse-pounding songs from lots of indie bands, mostly matched
beautifully with the action. If you're sick of stick-thin porn stars
with inflatable-looking fake breasts, and want to see a movie full of
real beautiful women with curves you can really grab onto, take
Voluptuous Biker Babes for a
ride.
