Some of the best and most innovative sex movies are being produced by women. Most of these videos come from women's production companies; there are also a few from female directors working for mainstream studios, that we think share a distinctiveness of style and vision with their indie-porn sisters.

	Afrodite Superstar Femme Chocolat Adam & Eve/Femme Productions Afrodite Superstar is the first feature from "Femme Chocolat," a new division of feminist porn company Femme Productions dedicated to increasing ethnic diversity in porn. It's a welcome change to see so many performers who aren't white, blonde, and surgically-enhanced, but a laudable mission statement doesn't guarantee good moviemaking. Fortunately, this film stars the wonderful Simone Valentino, who combines great sexiness with great comic timing. She even has a good script to work with, playing Afrodite, a self-described "BAP" — Black American Princess — from Beverly Hills. One night while she's out at a karaoke bar with her best friend Isis, Afrodite is discovered by a hip-hop starmaker CEO. Afrodite doesn't actually have any talent, or any desire to be a musician, but she goes along for the ride while Isis provides music for her to lip-sync over. Eventually, of course, Afrodite has to decide whether she wants to live a lie, pretending to be a badass from Compton in a culture where women are routinely called bitches and hos, or if she wants to be true to herself and find her own path. The film is a gentle satire of gangsta rap culture, and ultimately a rather sweet love story. Some of the jokes are hilarious — Afrodite's gangsta alter-ego claims to have been born in prison! — though others are less inspired (she suffers a "wardrobe malfunction" during a live performance and has to apologize to her fans). The numerous fake music videos are a treat, too. The filmmakers occasionally hits you over the head with the feminist subtext (one character likes to quote Gloria Steinem and bell hooks, complete with attribution!), but their intentions are good. This is a porn movie, of course, and there are sex scenes, but there are long stretches of movie with no naked booty on screen at all, and less than half the movie features people fucking onscreen. Still, it's a sexy, funny, and best of all different film, well worth a look. (2007, 70 min.) 	Afterschool Special/Turn Me Up Over & On Fatale Media Fatale brings back two of their classic movies, together again for the first time on one DVD! Afterschool Special — Roughly speaking, a gang of big nasty lesbians descends on a bunch of nice straight girls having lunch after school, and mayhem of the sexual sort results. Everyone is having the time of their lives; this looks like the kind of movie you and your friends would make if you were attractive, physically varied college-age lesbians (and who are we to say that you are not?). The production values are, pretty much, "Hey, everyone, let's put on a porn movie," and this was shot in the days before Hi-8, but the sex is very authentic, very hot, and the performers are obviously very, very into what they are doing. (And, if we may be so bold, one of the performers wins the "best natural rack of the year" award, to boot.) Tie Me Up Over and On — Have you ever had the experience of waiting for a lover, a lover who you wanted so bad you were aching, to arrive? Sure you have. And then the lover arrived, and... things happened much like what happen in this movie. Two very attractive young dykes go at each other like they haven't had sex in weeks. 	Barbara Broadcast Too! Veronica Hart VCA Pictures You know that an adult movie actress is good at what she does when she does a scene in which her character loses her virginity, as an adult... and you believe every moment of it. Chloe is one of our favorite actresses here at Blowfish, and this movie shows why. She's cute, funny, and when she has sex, you know she's having a great time. The sex is sweet, fun, and hot. The movie is very funny in places, and don't we all wish we lived in a world in which sexual demonstrations at book signings were considered normal? While all the performers are attractive, none of them have a look that screams "porn star!", and that's a good thing. The women are a wide range of ages and physical types, and not one of them has an unnatural-looking body... and that's a very good thing. 	Barcelona Sex Project Erika Lust Lust Films of Barcelona Barcelona Sex Project is a smart, funny documentary about half a dozen sexy twenty- and thirty-somethings living in Barcelona, Spain. Director Erika Lust is adept at drawing them out, getting them to tell their life stories (including cross-continental moves, divorces, sexual fantasies fulfilled, career dreams and career realities, etc.). While there's a fair bit of talk about sex, the emphasis isn't exclusively erotic... until the sex scenes, of course. These are people you've gotten to know through their interviews, making it that much more real when they strip off their clothing and masturbate. There are three men and three women, all of them quite beautiful and relaxed when it comes to self-pleasure for your viewing pleasure. 	Bend Over Boyfriend Shar Rednour A hugely sexy, enormously entertaining instructional tape on... well, on women fucking men up the butt, hosted by the ever-wonderful sex educator and sex goddess, Carol Queen. The first-ever non-lesbian video by Fatale Productions, it's aimed at male-female couples who want to explore male-receptive anal sex (although the information is pretty much fine for anyone of any gender or orientation who's interested in buttfucking). It covers a wide range of butt-sex-related topics — fingering, dildos, butt-plugs, lubes, rimming, enemas, safety, cleanliness, general anal health — all with a cheerful, sex-positive, non-judgmental attitude. The advice and information is clear and accurate and extremely useful, but it's not dry or boring at all — the presentation is raunchy and funny, and there's lots of yummy, explicit sex scenes (featuring some seriously gorgeous non-porn-star performers) illustrating the techniques discussed. A unique tape in many ways, it doesn't make a lot of the standard assumptions about sex and gender that most porn and sex-ed videos make. It pretty much stopped the workday dead in our office when we put it in the VCR (back when we had such things). We love this tape, and can't recommend it highly enough. (1998, 60 min.) 	Bend Over Boyfriend 2: More Rockin', Less Talkin' Shar Rednour and Jackie Strano The sequel to Bend Over Boyfriend! This one is less focused on education and a lot more focused on entertainment (although there is still plenty of useful and cool information in it), with lots and lots and lots o' scenes of women fucking men up the butt. (There's a fair amount of other kinds of sex as well, including dildo-sucking, three-ways, and some very hot and imaginative role-playing, as well as plain old garden-variety fucking and sucking.) The sex is a bit more advanced than it is in the first Bend Over Boyfriend, but it has the same cheerful, intelligent, sex-positive quality, and the same attention to the women's pleasure as well as the men's. The performers are mostly not professionals, but ordinary folks, attractive in a non-standard porn way, who are totally enthusiastic about women doing men up the ass and are clearly having a blast doing what they're doing. 	The Black Glove / The Elegant Spanking Maria Beatty Blue Productions The Black Glove and The Elegant Spanking Two great films that go great together. Here's what we had to say about each of them: It's a rare and wonderful treat to see a porn film that applies a real artistry to its subject, and this elegantly perverse lesbian SM video is most definitely one of those rare treats. An exquisitely-made black-and-white movie, The Black Glove has the feel of a 1920's German art film, with a rich, shadowy, carefully crafted look and a slow, seductive pace. But don't be misled by all this high-falutin' artsy talk; there's lots of gorgeous kink to get you off, with bondage, gags, cunt and nipple torture, boot worship, and a hot wax scene that left us with our mouths hanging open in awe. (We won't tell you where the wax goes — you have to find out for yourself.) Elegant is definitely the word for the spankings in this graceful, genteel, exquisitely crafted gem of a movie. The scene is a simple and classic one — the punishment of a submissive housemaid by her mistress — but this arty, classy, black-and-white movie is anything but ordinary. Its perversities, which range from spankings and strappings to foot fetishism and piss play, are beautifully choreographed and skillfully framed, giving it a look that is lovely and haunting and intensely arousing. 	Bondage Boob Tube Madison Young MadisonBound/Blowfish Video Bondage Boob Tube was named Hottest Kink Film at the Feminist Porn Awards, and it's easy to see why. It's a delightfully surreal and sexy flick that begins with Jewell Marceau watching a 1950s TV series and lamenting the utter lack of sex therein. Soon she's transported into the TV show — dressed in a period polka-dot dress, no less — where she finds out things aren't quite as straitlaced as they seem. For one thing, the lamp in the living room is actually Madison Young in bondage with a lampshade on her head, and Jewell does her best to turn thfat lamp on. When Bridgett Harrington, a native of the TV world, bursts in, she's appalled at the action, and she and Jewell have a spirited debate about whether bondage is more suited to function or fun. Meanwhile, Chanta Rose and Satine Phoenix get together for a polite social tea, which soon moves into the realm of rope bondage and vintage '50s underwear! Soon Satine is all tied up, and Chanta gets to work on her with a (thankfully anachronistic) vibrator. We return to Jewell and Madison, who've taken their fun outside, where Madison is pressed into service as a human clothesline, suspended sideways in a net of ropes. It's not long before the clothespins come out, of course. Madison is hit with a riding crop, doused with cold water, and generally abused for Jewell's amusement.... but comeuppance always comes. Bridgett arrives and takes charge of Jewell, wrapping her in ropes and chastising her verbally and otherwise, at one point making her into a living watering can. By the end of the film, Madison is transformed into a human footstool, Jewell is made into a living TV stand-cum-drink holder, and all is right with the world. Lots of fun, raunchy, tell-it-like-it-is sex talk (if you guys have ever wondered what women talk like when you're not there, this is the movie to buy), along with the usual sensual, emotional, woman's-point-of-view sex scenes that are the trademark of Candida Royalle's Femme Productions. It's a pleasure to see some mature, thirty- and forty-something, porn-veteran women instead of the usual assortment of just-post-teen porn bunnies; and there's some excellent sex advice snuck in with the entertainment. 	Champion Shine Louise Houston Pink and White/Blowfish Video Champion, directed by celebrated feminist porn director Shine Louise Houston, stars Syd Blakovich (a Blowfishie and a real-life mixed martial artist) in a tale of fucking and fighting that transcends the level of ordinary porn; it's better considered as an indie lesbian film that happens to include a lot of explicit sex. Jessie (Syd) is a martial artist on the cusp of the big time — going on the circuit, getting corporate sponsorship, the whole deal. But the clean and wholesome image her manager has worked so hard to create is starting to slip as rumors of her homosexuality and promiscuity begin to slip out onto the internet. Things get worse when an old enemy threatens to reveal the truth about Jessie's life to a magazine — unless Syd agrees to throw an important fight. Intermingled with this tale of ambition and betrayal are, of course, lots of the intense, passionate, and playful lesbian sex scenes we've come to expect from Houston's work. The best of a very good lot is Syd's sex with Blowfish favorite Madison Young, which is one of the hottest girl-girl scenes ever committed to film: Syd's easy control makes a captivating match with Madison, who is fetchingly all a-tremble as she's slapped around, eaten out, and fucked with a strap-on. 	Chemistry, Volume 1 Tristan Taormino Vivid Finally, someone has done something interesting with the idea of reality-porn! In Chemistry, Volume 1, Tristan Taormino, sex columnist, author, and director, locked seven porn stars up in a house for a day and half, and did interviews and sex scenes, one after another, with them. The results are utterly charming, even more than her previous release House of Ass (which we loved, too). The stars are interesting and articulate, the sex is incredibly hot (after the very first scene, we're amazed Mr Marcus has a cock left), and the whole thing is like the absolute best dirty weekend ever. We're also pleased to see that it stars Dana DeArmond, who appeared in our release Superfreak ... hi, Dana! 	Chemistry, Volume 2 Tristan Taormino Vivid/ Smart Ass Chemistry, Volume 2 is the follow-up to Tristan Taormino's award-winning and celebrated "reality porn" release Chemistry. The premise here is essentially the same: Tristan locked eight porn stars in a house for 36 hours, interviewed them, and filmed them having sex — with no script and no direction beyond being told who to sleep with, so they could do whatever they like. The group dynamics are fascinating, the sex is crazy hot, and the production values are great. The interviews, which provide real insight into life in the business, are awesome, too. It's a great film all around, and including the bonus features, there are probably around five hours of footage, so there's plenty to sink your teeth into. It differs from most reality shows principally in the lack of conflict and "villains." Perhaps it's because they were only in a house together for a day and a half, but they all seem to get along remarkably well, and overall they radiate positivity. (Which doesn't mean none of them critique the porn business, but their complaints tend to have more to do with institutional problems than interpersonal ones.) This is a lot smarter than your average porn, and that's a good thing; smart is sexy. (2007, 180 min.) 	Chemistry, Volume 3 Tristan Taormino Chemistry, Volume 3 is the latest in Tristan Taormino's groundbreaking "reality porn" series, and it's hot, funny, and enlightening. Six well-known adult film stars — Roxy DeVille, Hillary Scott, Jada Fire, Christian, Derrick Pierce, and Steven St. Croix — were locked in a house for 36 hours, filmed constantly, periodically interviewed, and encouraged to fuck one another any way at any time, with no direction. The result is a three-and-a-half hour film with about nine actual sex scenes and countless scenes of conversation, confession, laughter, and goofing around. If you're interested in wall-to-wall-sex, this isn't for you, but if you have any curiosity about the real people in porn, this is a rare chance to look behind the curtain. Derrick Pierce and Roxy DeVille are especially interesting with an ongoing discussion on the dynamics of rough sex (choking, slapping, etc.) — when it's hot and when it's not, when it's acceptable and when it crosses a line. Roxy is totally hilarious, too, presenting a non-stop stream of jokes and stories and weirdness, including cartoon voices and her strange predilection for rolling around in empty bathtubs. Hillary is, as always, flat-out adorable, and Jada doesn't take crap from anybody. They all talk about what they like, and don't like, in their personal and professional sex lives, and discuss strategies for getting through especially tough days on the job. The best sex scenes involve Roxy and Derrick together and Hillary and Christian together, but there are plenty of threesomes, foursomes, and shower sex (poor Christian could barely wash himself without getting ambushed). There's not much in the way of interpersonal drama, with everyone pretty much getting along, so don't expect the petty slapfights typical of most reality shows. It's nice to see performers talking so openly and honestly, and having so much fun. There are heaps of bonus features, including lots of extra footage, and if you really are just interested in the sex, there's a positions menu, too. Nominated for the 2009 Feminist Porn Awards! 	Chemistry, Volume 4 Tristan Taormino Vivid Ed Chemistry Volume 4: The Orgy Edition is the latest and greatest in Tristan Taormino's fantastic reality show porn series. Six porn stars spend 36 hours in a house together, with no director, no script, and no rules... though they're certainly encouraged to fuck one another. They hook up as the whim takes them, and there's a level of humor, fun, and spontaneity that's rarely present in scripted porn — right from the beginning, when the ever-hilarious Evan Stone pounces on the delightful Penny Flame poolside and begins eating her out. They're two of the most engaging personalities in porn today, and seeing them have a good time together made a fantastic start. Tristan peels them off one another long enough to do a funny little introductory session where everyone introduces themselves... which soon devolves into a five-way fuckfest. ("New guy" Johnny Sinns was running late, and so missed out on the orientation orgy, though he has a tremendous scene with Penny Flame once he does show up.) Things just go on from there, with people pairing up (and otherwise teaming up) for blowjobs, fucking, and assorted excitements. A pair of Tantric sex teachers come in to hold a little workshop about the sacred qualities of sex, which leads to some illuminating and serious talk from the performers about the role of sex in their own lives. The sex scenes are fantastic, varied, and fun, and the interviews provide a rare and alternately hilarious and moving glimpse into world of porn. Indeed, it's an elegant and even sweet indie film, made with great care and attention to detail, with a willingness to linger that's absent in most frenetic mainstream porn. There are only two performers onscreen, the blonde London and the boyish Dylan Ryan, and the success of the production depends entirely on their chemistry together; fortunately, they seem perfectly at ease with one another, and the film is like a glimpse into a long lost weekend of languid lust. Dylan and London make love to one another in a motel, and that's all there is to this film, but the closeness of the focus does not necessarily mean a lack of variety. There are scenes shot in black and white, with both women in boy-drag; scenes with elegant evening gowns and high black boots; scenes of breathless fucking in a bathroom; scenes of dripping candlewax; scenes of face-riding, featuring a dildo in a mouth harness. With a glitter-glam style that's both flashy and trashy, Sugar High Glitter City is set in an imaginary future where sugar is illegal, and dyke "sugar-hos" sell their bodies to other women to get their hands on the sweet white powder. 	Taken Veronica Hart Taken is another fine film directed by Veronica Hart which happens to hit all of the elements that we look for in a Couple's Video (see the top of the Couple's Videos section to see what those are). It's a plot-oriented, romance novel-type story of a rich housewife/mother (Ginger Lynn) who's kidnapped by a stranger (Evan Stone, looking very Fabio — even wearing a white ruffled shirt in one scene) and kept captive until she falls in love with him. The film is mostly populated with performers approaching (or in the case of Hirschel Savage, about to leave) their forties, but they're all quite fit and attractive and still very sexy to watch. The sex, at times fast and even a bit rough, at other times gentle and slow, is all skillfully shot and edited together to show both the passion and personalities of the characters. Like her previous movies, The Wild Search is a tour-de-force of lesbian sex, featuring lots of hot butches and femmes from the San Francisco area. This is the pure product. There are no gay-for-pay bottle blondes with scary fake fingernails engaged in perfunctory open-mouthed tongue kissing here — except in a brief, hilarious scene that parodies such moments in mainstream porn movies. The basic premise is clever and used to very funny effect. A documentary film crew follows around another documentary film crew as they attempt to film the mating habits of San Francisco lesbians. So The Wild Search is a (fake) documentary about a (fake) documentary about (real) lesbians. (Follow all that?) Imagine one of those National Geographic programs, with cameras watching lions from the distance, only instead of lions, they're watching lesbians. The fundamental joke is that the people having sex don't notice the camera crew in their apartment or in the bar, and there's a really funny bit of business with a "decoy lesbian," a mannequin dressed up and sent out to attract the natives. All that's cute and innovative, but what about the sex? This is a film made by and for lesbians, but given the tastes of most heterosexual men, they're likely to enjoy this, too, and it might even dispel some silly misconceptions about how women have sex. (Short answer: they have sex in all sorts of awesome ways.) The sex scenes are often really intense, especially a long three-way with two women wearing strap-ons. The most important thing: this is real fucking, messy, gasping, sweaty, improvisational, impetuous, spirited, and beautiful. It's a very funny mockumentary, but there's nothing mock about the sex. 	Way of the Dragon Celeste Digital Playground This has about as much to do with anything in Asia as The Mikado has to do with Japan (that is to say, not much except nice costumes and sets... really quite lovely ones, in the case of this movie). That being said, it's a great movie. Celeste creates a series of beautifully-shot, wordless vignettes, all moving slowly and stylishly (indeed, it reminds us just a bit of Kabuki in that regard). Some are girl/girl/boy, some are girl/girl, some are just girl, but they all move at a dreamy, delicate pace, nothing like the slam-slam-slam style so popular these days. The videography and art design are gorgeous, sometimes stunning. Although it's not really a "bondage" movie, there's fair amount of very attractive rope bondage, too, and one scene with an actress lashed to a post that's definitely a bit more extreme than we've seen in mainstream porn for a while. And if AVN creates a "Best and Most Thorough Use of Chopsticks" award, this is a shoo-in. All of the scenes are worth watching, repeatedly, at great length. The performers are very attractive, both male and female, and there's a lot more female wetness than we usually seen in a mainstream porn movie. If you are looking for something as interesting and beautiful as a Michael Ninn movie, without Ninn's frenetic editing or sense of cool reserve, Celeste (and this movie) are the movies for you. The final scene, with Roxy and Derrick romping all over the kitchen, is an exceptional meeting of two formidable talents having the time of their lives. It all adds up to a few laughs and a lot of hot fucking, and who could ask for more?
