Not every great movie has won awards, but these all have!

	Fallen Brad Armstrong Wicked Jessica Drake stars in sexual urban fantasy epic Fallen, directed by Brad Amstrong, her real-life husband (and co-star in one memorable scene). Jessica plays a guardian angel who fails to properly protect her mortal charge, and in punishment is stripped of her wings and sent to live as a mortal. In order to fill the inner void left by her expulsion from Heaven, she turns to acts of sexual excess — ultimately looking for love, but content with orgasm. Highlights include a twenty-minute orgy scene with lots of cocksucking, anal, and double penetration. (There's an extended version of the orgy scene on one of the bonus discs that goes on twice as long and actually flows better, but given the film's nearly-three-hour running time, it's understandable that they cut it down for the feature.) 	Barcelona Sex Project Erika Lust Lust Films of Barcelona Barcelona Sex Project is a smart, funny documentary about half a dozen sexy twenty- and thirty-somethings living in Barcelona, Spain. Director Erika Lust is adept at drawing them out, getting them to tell their life stories (including cross-continental moves, divorces, sexual fantasies fulfilled, career dreams and career realities, etc.). While there's a fair bit of talk about sex, the emphasis isn't exclusively erotic... until the sex scenes, of course. These are people you've gotten to know through their interviews, making it that much more real when they strip off their clothing and masturbate. 	Pirates 2: Stagnetti's Revenge Joone Digital Playground Pirates 2: Stagnetti's Revenge is a big-budget epic with lots of special effects, lavish sets, an enjoyable pulp fiction adventure plot, and ten sex scenes featuring comely wenches and able-bodied seamen. The leading lights of the main cast are Jesse Jane as a sword-swinging pirate hunter; Evan Stone at his over-the-top best as the captain; and Belladonna as a dangerous female pirate. 	Icon Eli Cross Sex-Z Pictures Icon stars Hillary Scott as a bratty, snarky version of herself working for a prima-donna version of her actual director, Eli Cross. It's a funny movie about making porn movies, and the sharp writing takes lots of amusing potshots at the industry, and it's good to see them willing to laugh at themselves as much as they mock their competitors. Best of all, Icon serves up three full hours of hardcore sex, usually group sex, often kinky group sex, with all the ass-fucking one would expect from reigning anal princess Hillary Scott (and from most of the other lovely women as well, including Trina Michaels, Amber Rayne, and Jennifer Dark, yum). 	One Night Stand (Pour Une Nuit) Émilie Jouvet Fatale Media One Night Stand is an award-winning indie lesbian film from France. First scene "Underground," is set in a lesbian nightclub, all pounding music and meat-market hookups, and it's more a scene-setting apertif than a true sex scene. The basic premise is clever and used to very funny effect. A documentary film crew follows around another documentary film crew as they attempt to film the mating habits of San Francisco lesbians. So The Wild Search is a (fake) documentary about a (fake) documentary about (real) lesbians. (Follow all that?) Imagine one of those National Geographic programs, with cameras watching lions from the distance, only instead of lions, they're watching lesbians. The fundamental joke is that the people having sex don't notice the camera crew in their apartment or in the bar, and there's a really funny bit of business with a "decoy lesbian," a mannequin dressed up and sent out to attract the natives. All that's cute and innovative, but what about the sex? This is a film made by and for lesbians, but given the tastes of most heterosexual men, they're likely to enjoy this, too, and it might even dispel some silly misconceptions about how women have sex. (Short answer: they have sex in all sorts of awesome ways.) The sex scenes are often really intense, especially a long three-way with two women wearing strap-ons. The most important thing: this is real fucking, messy, gasping, sweaty, improvisational, impetuous, spirited, and beautiful. It's a very funny mockumentary, but there's nothing mock about the sex. 	FUCK Armstrong, Brad Wicked Pictures With a title like FUCK, you might expect a no-frills, down-and-dirty shagfest, but FUCK is actually one of the stranger and more stylish films you're likely to encounter, and it has plenty of AVN Awards to testify to its quality. Subtitled "A Lesson in Lust," FUCK is a sort of brief history of copulation, and each of the six scenes takes place in a different period, from prehistoric times to the future. "Barbarians" features Tommy Gunn in full Conan garb, with Lori Lust and Exotica dressed in the requisite chainmail bikinis, serving their barbarian chieftain — cheesy props aside, it's a pretty standard three-way scene. Things get more interesting in "Kali," with Ice La Fox as an Indian goddess with six arms (the other arms are provided by fellow actresses, but the optical illusion actually works fairly well). 	Corruption SexZ Pictures Corruption combines a compelling story, flawed characters, high production values, and gonzo stunt-fucking in an epic tale of power and, yes, corruption. The center of the film is the relationship between Bryn Pryor (as ruthless Republican senator and presidential hopeful David Walker Helms) and Hillary Scott (as his willing and eventually ill-used fucktoy Natasha). There are a lot of plot twists, far too many to enumerate, and the film is worth watching for the story alone. The plot is driven mostly by the senator's wife (played with great sexiness and charisma by Kylie Ireland), who tries to get rid of Natasha because the senator keeps taking her out with him in public, and reporters are beginning to suspect an affair. Of course, the truth is far more depraved than a mere affair, with Natasha tormented for the senator's amusement, used to seduce and blackmail political rivals, and constantly defiled, to her own great delight. Most of the sex scenes — which are long, involved, emotional, and indescribably raunchy — serve the story, revealing things about characters and driving the plot. All the gonzo stops are pulled out, with gangbangs, double vaginal penetration, double anal, slapping, spitting, bondage, choking blowjobs, dirty talk, and more, but it all makes perfect sense for the characters, who are desperate to feel anything real, and who seek ever more extreme sexual outlets for their frustration and rage. Only the final orgy scene is a disappointment — it's meant to highlight the senator's loneliness and desolation as he sits alone in the midst of depraved acts of sport-fucking, and that works, but there's a hollowness to the by-the-numbers orgy that's disappointing after the intensity of the other scenes. Still, even with that low point, there's still 3 hours and 40 minutes of great sex-and-story here, which should be enough for anybody. 	Island Fever 4 Digital Playground Island Fever 4 is a sumptuous feast for the eyes, a testament to the power of natural beauty — said natural beauty being the islands of Bora Bora and the Bahamas where the film was shot, of course, and not the breasts of the leading women, which are lovely, but mostly not natural. (For that matter, a couple of the waterfall effects looked computer-generated, too.) This is clearly the big movie for Digital Playground for last year, and the production values are high. There are almost twenty scenes, ranging from brief tease shots of women frolicking in the surf to boy-girl sex, girl-girl sex, and — the centerpiece of the movie — a four-way orgy with Jana Cova, Teagan Presley, Jesse Jane, and Sophia Santi. It's a luscious scene, with all four women showing tremendous enthusiasm, and it rightly won the AVN Award for Best All-Girl Sex Scene. Most of the scenes are great — is there anything more lovely to look at than beautiful people making love on tropical islands? Plus, there's lots of it, over three hours of film on two discs, plus a bonus disc heaped with extras. There's no vocal track, so you never hear a human voice or the sound of bodies coming together in the course of the film. The soundtrack varies between sort of boring instrumental music and more interesting Polynesian-style drumming, and there are lots of quick cuts and some camera effects — the overall impression is of a slick, sexually-explicit music video, and this is an exemplar of that style. The extras include a very impressive selection of behind-the-scenes footage, a funny short film (Crazy Evan's Island Movie) featuring Evan Stone hamming it up like a lunatic, some bloopers, tons of photos, and about thirty trailers. 	Sex Pix Red Light District Sex Pix combines raunchy sex with an engaging plot and pretty good acting, making it one of the best films in recent memory. Cheryl (Sunny Lane) wakes up in a messy room with a head wound, with no memory of who she is or where she is or why she's mostly naked, with only an angry naked bandaged cowboy for company (played by Evan Stone, in a role that won him an AVN Award for best actor). She discovers a pile of Polaroid photos of herself engaged in various sex acts, which disturbs her. When she tries to find out what's going on, the cowboy gets furious and hits her, she breaks a bottle and stabs him in the neck, and he dies. And that's just the beginning — or, more accurately, the end. The film proceeds in a series of flashbacks in reverse chronological order, running back through the past couple of days to gradually reveal who the angry naked cowboy is, who Cheryl really is, and how she lost her memory. (Yes, the gimmick is stolen from the movie Memento, but it's put to original use here.) Red Light District is known for its hardcore, sometimes gonzo and over-the-top, movies, and they combine that rough-riding aesthetic with a feature-film plot to great effect here. Put simply, the sex is incredibly hot. Sunny Lane excels in all her scenes, and she can play innocent amnesiac or experienced sex kitten with equal aplomb. The big orgy scene — featuring three guys and six women — looks fun and spontaneous, with lots of partner-swapping and stunt-fucking, and Hillary Scott's anal scenes are amazing. 	Jenna's Provocateur: Sophia Rossi Jenna Jameson Vivid/ Club Jenna Jenna Jameson is a legend in the business, and one of the only porn stars to become a household name even in mainstream media, so you might worry that her move to directing might be mere gimmickry, using her famous name to draw attention to a mediocre movie. Quite the contrary. Jameson is just as good behind the camera as she is in front of it, maybe even better, and she's created one of the hottest and beautifully designed films this reviewer has ever seen. There hasn't been a porn flick with this much attention to costuming and design since Fashionistas, though Provocateur is blessedly unburdened by plot, and lives up to its "couture film" subtitle. Most of the performers wear several costumes before becoming undressed, from corsets to gowns to lingerie to weirder things (lace chaps, anyone?), and the sets are lavish, opulent, and beautifully designed, a welcome change from the "digital video camera in a hotel room" school of erotic cinema. Even the soundtrack rocks. The attention to detail is astonishing. Jameson knows what viewers like, and she's tried to include something for everyone. Want to see a luscious brunette gangbanged by three guys in tuxedos? Check. A well-endowed blonde riding a Monkey Rocker sex machine before fucking the old fashioned way? Got it. Two women passionately kissing before one fucks the other up the ass with a strap-on? You're in luck. Tender sex? Sure thing. Rough sex? That too. Women having oral sex on the back of a mechanical bull? (Okay, that one's a little odd, but it's still hot, lace chaps and all.) This film has the look of high gloss — it's shot on film, with costuming better than many mainstream movies — but the tone is pure, delightful smut. The ghost, who appears only briefly between possessions, is played by director Shine Louise Houston, who does an impression of Rick James that rivals Dave Chapelle's. Houston is rapidly becoming a name to be reckoned with in the world of independent lesbian porn, and Superfreak is just as hot (and far funnier) than her first award-winning film The Crash Pad. And we get to see the couples not only having sex, but talking about sex. They also talk about love, romance, how they met, and all sorts of other very personal, intimate things. It's regular porn, and communication porn brought together. Damon and Hunter: Doing it Together follows in the real life couples tradition of other Comstock films with the added bonus of being shot on film so it looks stunning. Really. 	Pirates Joone Digital Playground This is a very good porn movie. The budget was huge, the special effects are pretty good (superb by porn-movie standards), and the sex is really, really hot. The reason we hesitated for so long in carrying it is that clearly aspires to be more than that: It wants to be a Real Movie, and to be one of those porn movies that flies from the lower plutonian depths of Porn to the high pure air of Cinema. It's not all that. But it's a great, rousing and arousing porn flick. Janine is very hot (and does a great acting job) as the pirate princess who is starting to doubt. Jesse Jane and Carmen Luvana are as hot as always. Evan Stone chews the scenery with relish. Steven St. Croix chews the scenery with ketchup. Tommy Gun... well, nice sneer, kiddo. The skeletons are great, the ship exteriors not so much. You get a really beautiful package, with a three disk set, including an extra disk with the HD-DVD version that should play beautifully on your HD-DVD player and television. 	The New Devil in Miss Jones Paul Thomas Vivid Videos In a word, Awesome. It completely dominated the AVN awards winning every award it could possibly win; and while that doesn't always impress us, in this case it's well deserved. It's basically a real movie, with real plot, real dialogue, and pretty darn good acting. If you took the sex scenes out you could probably show it in a movie theater. But you definitely would not want to take out the sex scenes, because they are insanely hot, including a believable dungeon SM scene and a scorching girl on girl scene. The sex is so epic that after a while you start thinking, "Oh my god, another orgy, haven't there been enough already?" You already know the plot; Miss Jones is a virgin suicide who gets sent straight to hell despite her clean living ways, suicide being a sin and all. She begs the devil for another go at life and gets her wish with the caveat that she has to start getting it on well and often. Director Paul Thomas throws in a few twists of his own but basically sticks with the original idea. Savanna Samson plays Miss Jones and she spends a good deal of the movie looking adorable in granny panties and no make up. Jenna Jameson is the devil, and I probably don't have to tell you that she is smoking hot. 	Rawhide Nicholas Steele Ultimate Pictures Beautiful photography, beautiful actors, and a beautiful plot... what more can you want from a porn movie? The plot's a good western one: A rancher's daughter sweeps into her father's spread, looking to sell out and cash in. The hands actually doing the work don't much take to that idea... but just how far are they willing to go to stop it? The production values are great (it was shot on HD, and well-rewards a huge monitor), the acting is good, and the script isn't just a way to get from one sex scene to another. Now that's what we call right neighborly values! The performers are all attractive and can act, and the story, while sometimes feeling a bit surreal, holds together. Most of the sex is enthusiastic and really does feel like the characters are getting off on showing off, including a surprise for mainstream porno — a mild hot wax scene. It's a plot-oriented, romance novel-type story of a rich housewife/mother (Ginger Lynn) who's kidnapped by a stranger (Evan Stone, looking very Fabio — even wearing a white ruffled shirt in one scene) and kept captive until she falls in love with him. The film is mostly populated with performers approaching (or in the case of Hirschel Savage, about to leave) their forties, but they're all quite fit and attractive and still very sexy to watch. The sex, at times fast and even a bit rough, at other times gentle and slow, is all skillfully shot and edited together to show both the passion and personalities of the characters. 	Rocco: Animal Trainer 5 Rocco Siffredi Yet another shining example of Rocco in action, Animal Trainer 5 brings even more kinky, down-and-dirty sex to the screen for your viewing pleasure. Just as rough and wild as the earlier Animal Trainer videos, this movie, with its hot group sex, one double anal penetration, choking blowjobs, butt-and tit-slapping (oh, hell, they slap every female part they can reach) and acrobatic, how-do-they-do-that-sex, is not for the timid. The first scene, which features two het couples in a bathroom, reveals Rocco's charming fetish for trying to force the woman's head in the toilet while he buttfucks her. And the third scene, an anal gang-bang, is extremely hot if you like your sex so rough it's scary (it actually managed to squick one of the Blowfishies, while also winning AVN's 2002 Best Anal Sex Scene award). 	Dark Angels Nic Andrews Skillfully directed, beautifully filmed, with a seriously interesting story and wicked-hot sex, Dark Angels is that rarest of all rarities — a sex video that works both as a movie and as smut. New Sensations reportedly spent months on this film, both in production and post-production, and quite a bit of money as well. And it shows: Dark Angels does an excellent job of pushing the boundary between porn-movies and movie-movies. The production values are first-class (well, on the porno scale of things, anyway), with excellent editing, way-cool special effects, and camerawork that puts other porn movies to shame, all adding up to a stylish, striking, and compelling overall look. The story (a supernatural vampire crime thing — Buffy and Angel fans will love it) is actually interesting, and the acting and writing are pretty decent; it's not Citizen Kane, but it's definitely on a level with a good B-movie, and we had no desire whatsoever to fast-forward through the plot. And the sex is gorgeous and wild, with attractive performers who seem really, really happy to be there. Highly, highly, highly recommended — the whole office was totally distracted the day we popped it into the VCR (back when we had such things), and some of us count it among the best adult movies we've seen. Do note that there is some violence in it, including a couple of "vampires killing their victims after fucking them" scenes — we personally found them totally hot, but it may not be your thing. 	Dark Garden Michael Ninn From the acclaimed director of Latex, Shock, and Ritual comes one of the most visually exquisite adult movies we've seen in a long, long time. Beautifully filmed, heavy on the atmosphere, with expert camerawork and lighting that often moves past mere skill into real artistry, Dark Garden has an elegant, smoky cinematic style that's a strong sensual pleasure to watch. Set in a Bladerunner-esque retro-future world of opulence and corruption, the story centers on a drug-like implant that creates a hallucinatory total-sensory experience directly in the user's brain (a la Brainstorm or Johnny Mnemonic). 	Zazel Collector's Edition Gorgeous, exotic, imaginative, exquisitely well-made... what other extravagant words of praise can we lavish on this video? A series of fantastical vignettes taking place in the mind of a beautiful artist, Zazel has a lush, surreal, other-worldly quality to it, with an inventive eye and a slow, sensual pace. Reaching beyond your usual high production values into real artistry, the movie has some truly stunning work with body paint and costuming, marvelous effects with color and light, and camerawork with a real eye for composition. (It does slip over into pretentious silliness now and then, but we like the movie enough to let that slide.) 	Andrew Blake® Unleashed Andrew Blake® Studio A Entertainment This is another quality film from Andrew Blake®, the always-stylish director and former fashion photographer. As always, the people are absolutely stunning, and the cinematography is glossy and elegant. This claims to be the first in a series, the Sleepless Nights Collection. This one centers on Selena and Laura Palmer, who receive a magic pendant that brings out their deepest fantasies. Highly recommended to anyone who has enjoyed Blake's® previous work. He also seems to be getting a bit more erotic and raunchy, which is (in this Blowfishie's opinion) a good thing. This one includes some of our favorite actresses, including Asia Carrera. 	Fantasy Chamber Cameron Grant A marvelous film from Cameron Grant, director of Erotic Visions and The Dinner Party (two of our favorite and most popular videos). Another of his series-of-fantasy-vignettes videos, this one takes place entirely inside the mind of a woman immersed in a sensory-deprivation chamber (or does it...?). Like Grant's other work, Fantasy Chamber combines both high production values and intense, nasty sex; the sex in this one is definitely on the nasty side, with a hefty dose of buttfucking and a higher-than-average dose of kink — kink that is both classier and more genuine-feeling than is usual in most porn movies. The scenarios are imaginative (this reviewer's girlfriend was particularly impressed with the latex-lesbian three-way which won the AVN award for Best All-Girl Sex Scene), the camerawork is beautiful, the costumes kick butt, and the performers are quite attractive and seem genuinely engaged with what they're doing. 	Bill and Desiree: Love is Timeless Bill and Desiree: Love Is Timeless is a documentary that tells the true story of two older people who met, fell in lust, and then fell in love (without giving up the lust). Director Tony Comstock specializes in films about real couples and true love, asking people to talk about their relationships, how they met, and what their sex lives are like. The story here is sweet and funny — they first met at a clothing-optional event, where he was rendered breathless and captivated by the beauty of her vagina, basically — and the two have a chemistry and rapport that's beautiful and heartening to behold. The second half of the film shows them making love, and though they're well into middle age, that doesn't dampen their enthusiasm or adventurousness (she even wears a Feedoe dildo, which he sucks). It's a lovely, sexy, life-affirming film, and should give everyone watching hope for finding or keeping love in the latter half of life. 	Layout Thomas, Paul Vivid Layout is good porn, but even better, it's a good movie. Director Paul Thomas is at his sharpest, wittiest, and most inventive as he examines the subject he knows best: the adult movie business. Most of the action centers around the staff and subjects of Adult Video Guide, a fictional trade journal for the adult industry (based loosely on the real-life Adult Video News). Layout is a complexly layered collage of a film, featuring interesting characters drawn from various spheres of the adult movie business: jaded editors, has-been porn stars trying to make a comeback, sleazy boyfriend/managers, vicious up-and-coming starlets, idealistic young writers, and more. Penny Flame is the cold heart of the film, playing a well-educated junior editor who lost track of her humanity at some point, and who uses her influence to seduce starlets hungry for fame. Flame's presence is the most striking thing here, but the other actors do a great job too, including Briana Banks as a bitchy porn superstar, Tom Byron as the long-suffering AVG editor, Tyce Bune as the totally insane publisher, and Kylie Ireland as a self-assured former star getting back into the business. There's humor — the backstage glimpses of porn sets are amusing, and some of the fictional movies-within-the-movie are hilarious, especially the delightfully cheesy costume drama "The Three Muskatettes." The dialogue is smart, the staging of the sex scenes is inventive, and the characters are compelling. The sex scenes are also very good, and absolutely hardcore — there's lots of anal, some DP, and quite a bit of bondage, most of the latter featuring Penny Flame, who plays both the binder and the bound at various points. A good story and great sex — who could ask for anything more? There's also a bonus disc with lots of extras, notably a long behind the scenes featurette. This is the best, most creative work Paul Thomas has done in a while.
