Why Silicone?
No, this isn't about the questionable anatomical attributes
of certain porn actresses... that's a subject for another
column. This is about silicone sex toys, butt-plugs
and dildos and the like. We carry them in great profusion,
and we're frequently asked... so, what's so special
about silicone for dildos?
- It feels great
- Silicone has a particular combination of softness,
flexibility, and resilience that makes it perfect for
sex toys. It has many of the same wonderful characteristics
that flesh has, without feeling creepily like flesh.
- It warms up nicely
- Silicone warms up readily. If you have ever reached
into a cold toy drawer and applied a too-cold sex toy
to your private parts, you know precisely how nice it
is that silicone warms up quickly.
- It's sturdy
- There's a caveat to this (see below), but silicone
toys last a long, long time. Part of this is the
material, and part of it is that silicone casting is
still a cottage industry, so each toy is made with a
lot of attention.
Now, it's not all good news about silicone...
- It's expensive
- This is the downside to the cottage industry part.
Since each one is made by hand, silicone toys are much
more expensive than toys made of latex or other materials.
- It's not indestructible
- Silicone toys have one very unfortunate
characteristic:
any cut in them will become progressively larger,
eventually ruining the toy. Keep the scissors (and cats)
away from your dildos!
So, if you are shopping for your first silicone toy,
what do we recommend? Here's some advice...
- Bigger is not better
- If you don't know precisely how big a toy to get, be
conservative. Despite what you read in porno novels, bigger
is not always better.
Sizing a dildo: If you have a male partner, you have
a convenient size reference right there, in the form of
his dick. Measure him, and use that for a basis on what
size to get. If you don't have a reference cock handy,
and you don't have any toys already to use for a guide,
consider starting small and working your way up. See more detail about
choosing a dildo on our dildo buying guide.
Sizing a butt-plug: We highly recommend the wonderful
books
The
Ultimate Guide to Anal Sex for Women and
The Ultimate
Guide to Anal Sex for Men. Both books are fine and useful for
people of any gender, and they're both great ways to get started in anal
play. In the case of a butt-plug, definitely start small, unless you
have experience in anal play and know your limitations already.
- Start Simple
- Unless you know just what you want, we recommend that
you start with a shape that is relatively conventional
(i.e., cock-shaped). Then, expand to other toys.
- Not all silicone is created equal
- There are varying grades of firmness in the silicone used by
different toy manufacturers. Some is pretty squishy and bendy, some is
moderately flexible and has a soft, fleshy resilience, and some is
firmer still, which allows it to be made into more detailed shapes,
with elaborately textured surface designs. If you're not sure how stiff
the silicone of a particular toy is and that's terribly important to you
please call us and ask for a recommendation.
