So you've got a dildo. Or maybe you don't have a dildo just yet. In either case, you know how you want to be using said dildo: you want to strap it on and fuck someone, or you want someone else to strap it on and use it to fuck you. But you're looking over the vast and tremendous variety of harness options, and while options are certainly nice things to have, you're feeling a bit bewildered -- how do you know which one is best? Or, to be more accurate, how do you know which one is best for you?

Well, fear not. Blowfish is here to help. While we can't tell you specifically which specific harness is best (if there were just one that was best for everyone, we'd be carrying just that one), we can give you a few pointers on how to choose a dildo harness that best suits your own personal and particular dildo harnessing needs and desires.

Dildo size.
All of our harnesses have the opening size listed in their description. You want your dildo shaft to be same size or a little smaller than the harness opening (and the base to be wider than that, so it doesn't pull right out of the ring or hole). In other words, if the harness opening is 2" and the dildo is 2-1/4", it won't fit. (Well...it may fit with a little stretching if the harness is stretchy and the dildo isn't too much bigger than the harness hole, but it's a risky business.) However, you also don't want the dildo to be a lot smaller than the opening, because then it will slide around and not stay solidly put.

Some harnesses have removable O-rings (an O-ring is exactly what it sounds like -- a round ring, in this case made of rubber), so you can adjust the size of the opening by removing one O-ring and putting in a different one. If you have a thinner dildo (1-1/4" in diameter, for instance), you probably want to get a harness with a removable O-ring, so you can put in a smaller O-ring for a snugger fit. We sell individually sized rings in our Cock-Ring section or you can buy a package of 5 ring sizes if you need a ring that's a different size from the ring(s) that come with your harness or if you've lost a ring. You can also probably locate rings at your local hardware store in a variety of sizes, but do keep in mind the limitations of your harness design when choosing a different ring size; the straps holding the ring in place may not accommodate every possible ring size.

Your size.
You want the harness to fit around the body of the person who's wearing it, and not be too small or too big. Usually this is given in a hip measurement, but sometimes it's a waist measurement. All of our harnesses have the sizes they will fit listed in their description, so pay close attention to the measurements and whether the manufacturer is basing the measurement on hips or waist.
Style.
You want to decide whether the person wearing it will be more comfortable with a G-string style harness (the type with a single strap going from front to back between the legs), or a two-strap style harness (the type with two straps going from front to back around each thigh). Generally speaking, most men who wear harnesses prefer a two-strap style, since the G-string style tends to press on and constrict the balls. (Of course, if you like having your balls pressed on and constricted, a G-string harness might be just the ticket.) Women and men with sensitive assholes may also prefer the two-strap style, to avoid any chafing or irritation that the G-string strap between the legs may cause. But many folks prefer the single- strap G-string style; they find it more comfortable, more attractive, and may even like the added sensation they get from having a strap between their legs. They have the added bonus of being able to insert a butt-plug or dildo into the wearer and with the center strap properly snug, the strap can hold that plug or dildo in place.

You may also need to decide what kind of side fastenings you prefer. Metal buckles make the harness stay in place a bit better without jiggling loose; plastic tension buckles or D-ring fasteners will adjust to a greater and more precise variety of sizes. Elastic hip straps generally have a smaller range of size variation in any specific size, but the lack of buckles makes for a smoother, and for many people, more comfortable fit.

And of course, you want a harness that you like the look of. We sell several different styles that each have their own functionality and beauty points, and a few even come in colors other than black.

Did our comment about men wearing harnesses catch your attention? Yes, men do wear dildo harnesses, it's a lovely way to fuck if you're not hard, or to continue fucking after you've come and gotten soft, or even perform double penetration all by yourself. We generally recommend the Supple Leather Two-Strap Harness for men who want a harness because it's the most adjustable harness we have. Just slip it on above your own package and go to town!

Material.
Most dildo harnesses are made of leather (usually black). We also carry harnesses made of rubber, vinyl, or fabrics. Many people find leather more comfortable and more attractive; however, fabrics are washable (by hand), come in different colors, and are vegetarian-friendly. Leather is also easy to clean with a damp (not wet) cloth, but folks who are especially messy with their harness sex may find that fabrics are easier to clean thoroughly with a soak in the sink. And for the ultimate in easy clean-up, the rubber harness is waterproof, so you can even jump in the shower with it still on to wash up! Do keep in mind that any metal buckles will need to be thoroughly air dried to prevent rusting.
There's one more question when choosing a harness.
Dildo style.
The above comments about dildos reflected standard dildos with a flat base. But what if you've got one of our Double Ended dildos? This question has been asked over and over again and our response has evolved over time as our stock of harness has changed. Here's the current information. So far as we can tell, a perfect harness for use with our double ended dildos still doesn't exist, or at least we haven't found it. But all of our current stock of harness can work with the Nexus, Nexus Jr., Feeldoe, or Feeldoe Slim with Vibrator with some adjustments.

We've had several customers report that they're very happy with using the Vibrating Velvet Harness or simliarly styled harnesses with a Nexus or Nexus Jr. (we don't have any reports on using the Feeldoe with these modified harnesses, if you've got comments, let us know!) after having removed the front center piece from the straps so that all they have in the front is straps connected to a ring (this does mean you can't use the vibrator pouch on the Vibrating Velvet Harness, of course) and then they adjusted the straps to move the ring a bit lower than it usually sits when the harness is used fully intact with a regular dildo. The same could be done with the Corsette Harness and the back/hip piece of the Corsette Harness may even help stabilize the harness better than other styles used in this fashion, depending on the wearer's anatomy, of course. In any of these cases you may find that you need to use a different ring size to hold the dildo properly. Since we have not tested any of these harnesses in this way, we can't speak from actual experience of this exact combination, but in theory it could work just fine.

All of our other harnesses can also be used with the Feeldoe, Nexus, or Nexus Jr. with some less dramatic adjustments. We have had some success being able to adjust them to fit even lower than normal to hold our double ended dildos in place. We have found the Supple Leather Two-Strap Harness to be the most adjustable of these models, but the other styles can also be hitched into a lower location for use with our double ended dildos. And the Low Rider harnesses are particularly well designed for use with these double ended dildos since they're specifically designed to place the dildo hole very low on the wearer. Of course, we can't guarantee any particular combination work for you, since harness fit is such a personal thing, but with the right fit, any of these harnesses can work with our double ended dildos.

If you're still pondering, you might consider getting some books or videos on the subject, such as The Ultimate Guide to Strap-On Sex or our immensely popular Bend Over Boyfriend video, to add to your store of information (as well as your store of entertainment). Happy shopping, and even happier fucking!
