(Spelling note: "Comix" is used to mean small-press, alternative comic books, where "comics" means mainstream, large-press books. Of course, nearly anything sexual is going to be "comix" by that definition.)

More recently, comix seem to have taken the brunt of much of the urge to censor. Perhaps it's because some people can't see a comic book without thinking "for children" (and there is no better way to get many people's rational minds to shut down than to introduce children into an argument).

For example, Omaha, the Cat Dancer is one of the most-banned books ever... despite the fact that it is a prime example of precisely what erotic material should be: witty, intelligent, arousing, and yet with a real-world approach to sex rather than just flights of fantasy. Sadly, Omaha is out of print, but we carry a bunch of other splendid comics.

Shadow and Light

This book caused quite a stir in the Blowfish office when it first came in. It's done in gorgeous black and white, and is just about perfect: hot, "realistic" themes, beautiful illustration, a cool and artistic air. Highly recommended.

Michael Manning's art work is immediately recognizable: bold, vivid black and white ink work, resembling Japanese woodcuts, along with some of the kinkiest sex that you will find in comix (which is saying something). These two books form a continuous story, of the politics and intrigue surrounding the highly-civilized, highly-decadent clans in a strange, orientalesque world.

His other books, Cathexis, Lumenagerie, and Tranceptor are also highly recommended.

Milos Minara has been doing sexy comix for years. This book is one of our best-sellers. It's a distaff telling of Gulliver's Travels, with a luscious female heroine. The sex is not in-your-face; there's just the lightest touch of some kinks (SM, beastiality), while remaining very light-hearted and funny.
