Sex toy aficionados have been singing the praises of
silicone for years (see also, our page about silicone toys). It's smooth and un-sticky, it has a
fleshy texture that's solid but has a fair amount of
give, and it picks up body heat very quickly. And
treated right, it should last for years. But you do
have to treat it right. Here's how. Silicone will hold up under a lot of abuse -- but not infinite abuse. A small tear in a silicone toy will very quickly become a big tear, and then a bigger tear, and soon after that your silicone toy will become two silicone toys, neither of which is very usable. So keep it away from anything sharp that could tear or scratch it. (That includes the cats -- it's been reported that cats adore silicone sex toys and think they're the best cat toy ever.) And don't bend it too outrageously; silicone is pretty darned resilient, but not infinitely so. The other common damage to silicone sex toys comes from silicone-based lubes. These lubes (such as Wet Platinum Premium Body Glide, BodyFluid, or Eros Bodyglide) will sometimes bond with the silicone in a dildo or butt-plug, making a sticky mess and damaging the surface of the toy. So stick with non-silicone lubes when you use silicone toys. If you use condoms on your silicone dildos and butt-toys (a great idea, by the way, both for easy cleanup and safer sex), do be aware that most lubricated condoms use some sort of silicone-based lube. We therefore strongly suggest that you use non-lubricated condoms for this purpose. Silicone isn't very porous, so it cleans up fairly thoroughly, especially compared to other soft, fleshy sex toy materials like jelly or the various "real-feel" materials. If you're in a monogamous or fluid-bonded relationship and are more concerned about general cleanliness than disease transmission, a good scrubbing with hot water and soap should be fine. If you are concerned about cootie transmission, you can soak silicone toys in rubbing alcohol or toy cleaner (although, of course, do not submerge a silicone vibrator!). (Some silicone toy makers suggest that you not use bleach, however, since it may cause discoloration.) You might also try putting condoms on your toys when you use them -- it's a very convenient way to keep them clean. Silicone dildos and butt toys can be boiled, too, which is a good idea if you have concerns about getting or giving STDs (for instance, if you're sharing toys with multiple partners). Some folks put their silicone toys in the top rack of the dishwasher; if you're going to do that, don't use detergent, as it's too harsh. Also, if your dishwasher uses a spot-resistant rinse, we suggest that you not wash your silicone toys in it. And however you clean your toys, dry them thoroughly before you put them away. (Again, of course, you shouldn't put a silicone vibrator into the dishwasher, you don't want water inside the thing!) Some silicone toy manufacturers suggest that you store their toys standing upright; they say that storing them flat can put stress on the place where the shaft meets the base, making it more likely to break there. If storing your toys upright isn't an option, we suggest that you rest the body of the shaft on something (like a folded-up sock), so it doesn't bend away from the base. And if you do store your silicone toys upright, be sure to lean the heads of the taller ones against something, so they don't get all bendy. Finally, keep them cool, dark, and dry (when you're not using them, obviously), and try not to moosh them too much. Silicone Toys |
