Angels in America: Part One: Millennium Approaches
Kushner, Tony
Theatre Communications Group
Winning the Pulitzer Prize for drama in 1993, Angels in America:
Millennium Approaches is the mind-blowing first installment of a
two-part play that, despite not being overtly sexual, definitely
deserves a place on our pages. With AIDS running rampant and Reagan in
the White House, playwright Tony Kushner takes a look at what it means
to be an American, seamlessly weaving realism into fantasy (and vice
versa) with a cast of characters that includes both the living and the
dead. Even in the midst of sickness and self-doubt, Kushner's characters
engage in dialogue that is witty, poignant, and even humorous. Tony
Kushner has a talent for standing on your toes while tickling you with a
feather; he keeps you laughing but you're still aware of the weight.

Best Lesbian Erotica 2007
Taorimino, Tristan (editor)
Cleis Press
What with all the fauxbian sex being showcased as the real deal, it
comes as no surprise that stories of real dykes having real sex in the
tender, hot, kinky, nasty, loving ways they do in their own lives are in
high demand. In Best Lesbian Erotica 2007, we get some of
the hottest writers around treating us to a sampling of diverse desires
that wets our panties. This one-handed read is packed cover to cover
with steamy stories of lust and desire that feels so real it is
palatable. It has a little bit of everything, too; kinky ladies leading
their pussy cats on leashes through hotel lobbies, sweet tales of
Valentines confections and sugar-filled lip locks, first time rendezvous
after many years of wanting, as well as a whole lot of gender role
switching, motorcycle riding, cock-sucking, bathroom stall rockin', fuck
'til you drop kind of action. With many of our favorite authors
including (but not limited to) Radclyffe, Rachel Kramer Bussel, Joy
Parks, and edited by Tristan Taormino, demi-god of all things sexy, you
are sure not be disappointed with this 2007 collection. (2006, 250 pp.)

Best Lesbian Erotica 2008
Taormino, Tristan (editor)
Cleis Press
If hearing the words "lesbian erotica" conjures up soft-focus visions of
women gently petting one another's breasts and hair, this notable
anthology is going to change all that. Best Lesbian Erotica
2008 finds all sorts of lesbians in all sorts of places, from
femmey college students to a friend's mom to an Amish teenager stuck in
a downpour with her friends. These women fuck one another with wild
abandon, often with a "no holes barred" sort of mentality that leaves
the reader breathless and sometimes more than a little wet herself. With
stories by Rachel Kramer Bussell, Shanna Germain, Peggy Munson and more,
this fantastic anthology is sure to tickle you just right. (2008, 254

Divas of San Francisco: Portraits of Transsexual Women
Steinberg, David
Red Alder Books
We love David Steinberg's photography here at Blowfish, so when we
discovered that he had a new collection out, we had to pounce on it.
Divas of San Francisco: Portraits of Transsexual Women is
the culmination of a five year project documenting the beautiful women
who frequent San Francisco's famous Divas Nightclub. Every type of woman
is represented here: various body types, ethnicities and ages grace the
pages. Taken with Steinberg's keen eye, the women in these images,
though all dolled up, are not of your stereotypical "drag queen"; from
candids to posed shots, Steinberg captures something of the personality
of each woman through the intensity of their gaze. Allowing a glimpse
into a world that few of us know much about, he helps demystify
transsexual culture and presents these women as the normal, everyday
people that they are. (2007, 64 pp.)

Gay Tarot
Based on the sequence and images of Waite-Smith style tarot decks,
Gay Tarot is a modern, homosexual interpretation of those
familiar symbols. And, wow, is it ever well-done. Updated not only for
gay life, but for modern living, the images reflect and refer to the
older images in the Waite-Smith style decks. For example, the 10 of
Swords features a computer screen showing the Waite-Smith style image of
the impaled figure. Others are more subtle: the 3 of Wands features a
(presumably gay) father waving goodbye to his young daughter on her way
to school, ghosted on either side by older images of the same girl,
while the Waite-Smith styles picture a man gazing out over a bay as his
three ships sail into the future. Other significant changes: The
Priestess is now The Intuitive, The Empress is now The Protector, The
Devil is now Self-Hatred, the Tower is now Revelation (with the image of
a young man coming out to his parents) and Judgement is now Beyond
Judgement. The court cards are titled Youth, Man, Guide, and Sage. The
little white book does its best to update the meanings as the images
have been updated, albeit in the usual minimal phrasing found in LWBs.
The best part of the LWB is the "self-image" spread (which is the only
spread included, although the LWB refreshingly acknowledges that there
are many different spreads, and you can make up your own). The changes
all make sense, the images are well-drawn, and the modern imagery makes
it more accessible for those who have trouble relating the more
traditional images to their modern lives. Overall, we're seriously
impressed with this lovely deck. Two fins up!

In a Metal Web
Manning, Michael
NBM
The third in the very popular and wonderfully naughty Spider
Garden series, In a Metal Web continues the story of
Sasaya Nijan, once a slave given to the Sacred Angrogyne Shaalis to pay
off a gambling debt, now the voluptuous caretaker of Hir sexual
playground known as the Spider Garden. But from the ocean depths the
Serpentine Sisters watch, planning to trick Sasaya into their devious
plans. Michael Manning's artwork (which also graces our Blowfish
Mermaid Mug) is as sharp as ever, and the sex depicted here is so
hot the review copy kept mysteriously disappearing from our Book Buyer's
desk. Definitely recommended. (2003, 70 pp.)

Small Favors: Girly Porno Comic Collection: Book One
Coover, Colleen
Eros Comix
Annie has a small problem with masturbation; according to the Queen of
her Conscience, she's already used up her lifetime allotment and she's
only twenty-one years old. The solution is Nibbil, the supposed cosmic
keeper of her conscience. And this tiny little nymph does manage to keep
Annie from masturbating too much — by becoming Annie's very own sexual
playmate.
This absolutely adorable, black and white comic features a
fresh, healthy enjoyment of sex that is all too rare in the genre. The
sex is rompy and fun, with some light BDSM and a playful attitude we
just love. We can't recommend this one highly enough. (2002, 128 pp.)

Three-Way: Erotic Stories
Tyler, Alison (editor)
Cleis Press
Three-way is hot, hot, hot! Whether the characters in these
stories are couples adding a "guest star" for the night or have more
complicated relationships, the sex in these tales is almost always
breathtaking. There's a higher level of characterization in these
stories, so not only are they simply good as stories, but the sex is
more meaningful (though that doesn't always mean it's tender or without
emotional consequences). Sometimes the most wrenching psychological
scenarios make for the hottest sex, and the stories in this book don't
shy away from that level of complication. And it's no wonder, with
stories by such seasoned pros as Thomas S. Roche, Rachel Kramer Bussel,
Alison Tyler (who is also the editor), Marilyn Jaye Lewis and others.

The Ultimate Guide to Anal Sex for Men
Brent, Bill
Cleis Press
Not just another good guide to playing with your butt, Bill Brent's
The Ultimate Guide to Anal Sex for Men covers all the
basics of anal play and then some. There's a whole chapter devoted to
debunking the myths of anal sex as they pertain to men (including "Only
Gay Men Do It" and "Nothing Was Meant to Go in There") and another on
anatomy and exercise that mentions side-benefits of anal play (such as
the health benefits of prostate massage). Written in a very clear,
readable style, the information contained in this book covers pretty
much everything you could want to know about anal sex — communication,
tools and toys, hygiene and diet, latex and lube, analingus, penetration
and positions (for both giver and recipient, and includes info on
dildo-fucking), fisting, anal health — and some things you might not
have even thought of — extreme sex (SM, gender-play, scat-play) and
recreational drug use. The book is directed at men, but Bill Brent does
take into consideration some women's issues (especially female anatomy
as it pertains to anal sex), and could certainly be used by women as
well (although The Ultimate Guide to Anal Sex for Women
deals more directly with women's concerns and might be more reassuring
for nervous female novices). In fact, the only complaint we have about
this impressive book is its skimpy resource section and lack of an index
(though the book's chapters are clearly laid out, so finding information
is less of an issue). Illustrated by Zanne and Fish (Fish did the
illustrations for The New Topping Book and The New
Bottoming Book, as well as The Ultimate Guide to Anal Sex
for Women). Highly recommended. (2002, 200 pp.)

The Ultimate Guide to Pregnancy for Lesbians
Pepper, Rachel
Cleis Press
Yes, we know, it's not about sex per se — but sex has been known to
lead to pregnancy on one or two occasions, so we decided to include this
useful and informative book in our catalog anyway. Whether you're
lesbian, bisexual, or heterosexual, if you're a woman who wants to get
pregnant without a male partner, you'll find this book a big help.
Includes info on many aspects of pregnancy — physical, legal,
emotional, and logistical, to name but a few — from pre-conception
(does thinking about getting pregnant count as a "pre-conceived
notion?") to early babyhood. Thoroughly researched, clearly and
humorously
written.
