Angels in America: Part One: Millennium Approaches
Kushner, Tony
Theatre Communications Group
Winning the Pulitzer Prize for drama in 1993, Angels in America:
Millennium Approaches is the mind-blowing first installment of a
two-part play that, despite not being overtly sexual, definitely
deserves a place on our pages. With AIDS running rampant and Reagan in
the White House, playwright Tony Kushner takes a look at what it means
to be an American, seamlessly weaving realism into fantasy (and vice
versa) with a cast of characters that includes both the living and the
dead. Even in the midst of sickness and self-doubt, Kushner's characters
engage in dialogue that is witty, poignant, and even humorous. Tony
Kushner has a talent for standing on your toes while tickling you with a
feather; he keeps you laughing but you're still aware of the weight.

Best Black Women's Erotica 2
Bashir, Samiya, ed.
Cleis Press
This is not your average anthology of erotica. The editor, Samiya
Bashir, collected these tantalizing pieces with the intention of
appealing to as many women as possible, and we have to say we find it
pretty darn appealing. We are amazed by the amount of variety presented
in this particular volume: the characters are young and old, strong and
submissive, and of many sexual persuasions. The originality of the
stories is also, well, stunning. A young woman with genital scaring
learns how to pleasure herself in "Seeing Stars". Gospel music inspires
something more than the Holy Spirit in "Shout". And a group of friends
share each other's beauty in "Meeting Eros". To say that this is not an
ordinary anthology is an understatement. (2002, 216 pp.)

Best Lesbian Erotica 2007
Taorimino, Tristan (editor)
Cleis Press
What with all the fauxbian sex being showcased as the real deal, it
comes as no surprise that stories of real dykes having real sex in the
tender, hot, kinky, nasty, loving ways they do in their own lives are in
high demand. In Best Lesbian Erotica 2007, we get some of
the hottest writers around treating us to a sampling of diverse desires
that wets our panties. This one-handed read is packed cover to cover
with steamy stories of lust and desire that feels so real it is
palatable. It has a little bit of everything, too; kinky ladies leading
their pussy cats on leashes through hotel lobbies, sweet tales of
Valentines confections and sugar-filled lip locks, first time rendezvous
after many years of wanting, as well as a whole lot of gender role
switching, motorcycle riding, cock-sucking, bathroom stall rockin', fuck
'til you drop kind of action. With many of our favorite authors
including (but not limited to) Radclyffe, Rachel Kramer Bussel, Joy
Parks, and edited by Tristan Taormino, demi-god of all things sexy, you
are sure not be disappointed with this 2007 collection. (2006, 250 pp.)

Best Lesbian Erotica 2008
Taormino, Tristan (editor)

women gently petting one another's breasts and hair, this notable
anthology is going to change all that. Best Lesbian Erotica

femmey college students to a friend's mom to an Amish teenager stuck in
a downpour with her friends. These women fuck one another with wild
abandon, often with a "no holes barred" sort of mentality that leaves
the reader breathless and sometimes more than a little wet herself. With

Best Women's Erotica 2008
Blue, Violet (editor)
Cleis Press
Sometimes, you just really need a woman's touch (in more ways than one).
Best Women's Erotica 2008 focuses on stories that are
written for women, with female viewpoint characters, and, for
the most part, are written by women. But don't try to pin down "women's"
erotica any more than that. Sure, there's an emphasis on character, but
these characters are as diverse as real women: tender, strong, naive,
experienced. And the stories follow suit, with sex that's rough, messy,
gentle, voyueristic and so forth. With stories by Alison Tyler, Morticia
Catherine, R. Gay, Lola David, Miel Rose, George Storey, Xan West,
Cerise Noire, Scarlett French, and many more. (2008, 240 pp.)

Bodies in Motion: Stories
Mohanraj, Mary Anne
This latest collection from Mary Anne Mohanraj is a story suite that
follows two Sri Lankan families throughout several generations. Although
only a few of these stories would qualify as outright erotica, almost
every piece deals directly with sexuality. Whether talking about
arranged marriages, rape or being gay in a conservative culture,
Mohanraj has a keen sense of character, bringing the events into sharper
focus. Because these are short stories, not a novel, we get only the
crisis points of these families, the moments that try their patience and
test their love for one another, making for compulsive reading.
Beautifully written, heart-wrenchingly realistic, these are stories that
will stick with you long after you've finished reading them. Hardcover.

Bottoms Up: Writing About Sex
Cage, Diana, ed.
Soft Skull Press
You know how it feels when you want to fuck someone so badly it makes
you ache? When the urge to throw someone up against a wall and kiss them
deeply overcomes any sense of decorum? These are those kind of stories.
The writing in Bottoms Up isn't nice, neat or tender, and
oh, do we love it that way. Mixing erotica, non-fiction and poetry,
editor Diana Cage (author of Box Lunch and host of our podcast) creates a sizzling hot
anthology full of the kind of sex, and conversations about sex, we wish
we had more often. Raw, desperate and needy, these pieces will leave you
sore, breathless and maybe crying a little bit — that is, crying for
more. (2004, 146 pp.)

C is for Coeds
Tyler, Alison (editor)
Ah, college. Long days where your time between classes was yours for the
fucking. Who doesn't sometimes reminisce about their days as a campus
coed? C is for Coeds is the perfect tool for getting you
going down on memory lane. With stories about watching your roommate
spank her boyfriend (in Michelle Houston's "Janelle's Spankology 101")
or a college girl getting mutually agreeable spankings from her
professor (in Greta Christina's steamy "This Week"), there's definitely
something here for even the naughtiest of readers, though there's plenty
of more straightforward sex as well. A great little collection with lots
of school spirit, it's sure to make you actually consider hitting
homecoming this year. (2007, 140 pp.)

Down and Dirty: 69 Super Sexy Short-Shorts (Volume 2)
Tyler, Alison, Ed.
Pretty Things Press
The first volume of this title just flew off of our shelves, so when we
saw there was a second volume, we pounced on it. With each of these 69
stories only lasting a few pages, you don't have to wade through too
much plot to get down and dirty with the characters. The introduction by
Alison Tyler hints that these morsels of sexual fantasy might be just
the thing to use while masturbating, and we have to agree! From spanking
stories to tales of shameless exhibitionists, there's something here for
everyone's wanking pleasure. (2004, 189 pp.)

From Porn to Poetry 2: Clean Sheets Celebrates the Erotic Mind
Indigo, Susannah and Brian Peters, eds.
Samba Mountain Press
This second volume from Clean Sheets is just as hot and eclectic as the
first. Even if you haven't read the first one, you know this isn't going
to be a typical anthology from the first story, "The Lucky Dick Club",
where the protagonist uses a lottery windfall to reward great lovers
from her past. Most of the fiction uses strong characters to spur on the
action, creating sizzling sex scenes that go beyond your typical
anatomical descriptions and into the emotional. The non-fiction ranges
from the useful ("How to Look at Girls" — written by a Blowfishie!) to
the hysterical ("25 Things to Do to a Tied-Down Lover") and even
includes an insightful review of Y Tu Mama Tambien. And
the poetry is simply beautiful — straightforward and sentimental while
still lyrical and not schmaltzy. All in all, a fine collection of work.

Got a Minute?
Tyler, Alison (editor)
Cleis Press
One of the great things about sixty-second erotica is that you get a
lot of variety packed into one slim volume. The other great
thing is, of course, that you don't have to go digging through lots of
plot and character-building in order to get to the wank scene (don't be
ashamed, we all do it). Got a Minute? has 60 different
quickies, with the subject matter ranging from spanking instructions to
blowjobs in dangerous alleys and nearly everything in between. With
stories by Rachel Kramer Bussell, Alison Tyler, Michael Hemmingson, N.
T. Morley, Teresa Noelle Roberts, and Shanna Germain (among others), you
know it's going to be a minute well-spent. (2007, 222 pp.)

Lips Like Sugar: Women's Erotic Fantasies
Blue, Violet, Ed.
Cleis Press
This book is full of just what the subtitle says: women's erotic
fantasies. But don't be fooled into thinking these are going to be
dainty, soft-focus and romantic fantasies. There's romance, sure, but
there's mostly a lot of spanking (usually from unexpected sources — a
police man, a mugger) and hot sex (between an artist and his model,
airport security and a passenger and sometimes even between a husband
and a wife). There's more dominance and submission in these pieces than
you'd expect, too. Still, despite how exciting these stories are,
they're packaged in a sweet little book that's innocent-looking enough
to read on the subway (well, as long as no one reads the subtitle). We
love the juxtaposition of a sweet little cover hiding naughty little
stories underneath. (2006, 173 pp.)

Luscious: Stories of Anal Eroticism
Tyler, Alison, Ed.
Cleis Press
It's about darn time they started doing anthologies based around a sex
act rather than an orientation! And it couldn't be on a better sex act
in our opinion — who doesn't like stories about butt sex? Edited by the
talented Alison Tyler, the sizzling stories in this anthology cover
every aspect of butt sex you can think of — fucking with dildos,
fucking with real cocks, finger-fucking, rimming and even fisting — in
pretty much every combination of gender/ orientation you could hope for.
Finally we can stop skimming through mixed anthologies, dog-earring the
stories that have the butt-fucking in them. Luscious is
your one-stop shop for butt-sex stories, and did we mention they're hot
as heck? Definitely recommended! (2006, 230 pp.)

Maids: An Erotic Anthology
Erotic Print Society
Erotic Print Society
What is it about a young woman in an apron that gets some of us going?
Maids: An Erotic Anthology explores the erotic world of
maids in great detail, from both a historical and an artistic
perspective. After a rather interesting introduction, the book
interjects bits of historical fiction (mostly maid-centric scenes from
that naughty era of Victorian erotic writing) with paintings and
photographs of maids from approximately 1750 to today. This
juxtaposition of erotica with naughty pictures (featuring everything
from plain nudes to various sex acts to whippings to even an implied
enema in one picture) is a brilliant idea, giving you something to feast
your eyes on while your mind processes the hot little sex scene you just
read, and we wish more erotica publishers would indulge in the practice.
A must for all lovers of a woman in an apron. (2005, 201 pp.)

Three-Way: Erotic Stories
Tyler, Alison (editor)
Cleis Press
Three-way is hot, hot, hot! Whether the characters in these
stories are couples adding a "guest star" for the night or have more
complicated relationships, the sex in these tales is almost always
breathtaking. There's a higher level of characterization in these
stories, so not only are they simply good as stories, but the sex is
more meaningful (though that doesn't always mean it's tender or without
emotional consequences). Sometimes the most wrenching psychological
scenarios make for the hottest sex, and the stories in this book don't
shy away from that level of complication. And it's no wonder, with
stories by such seasoned pros as Thomas S. Roche, Rachel Kramer Bussel,
Alison Tyler (who is also the editor), Marilyn Jaye Lewis and others.
